Bao Zhenmin

Bao Zhenmin, professor and PhD supervisor, graduated from Shandong Ocean University in 1982 with a degree in marine biology. In 1997, he received a doctorate in aquaculture from Qingdao Ocean University. Now he is the Dean of the College of Marine Life Sciences at Ocean University of China, the Director of the Key Laboratory of Marine Biogenetics and Breeding of the Ministry of Education, the Vice Chairman of the Ninth Committee of the Shandong Science and Technology Association, the President of Marine Economic Technology Society of Shandong Province and the Chairman of Shandong Young Scientists Association.

Professor Bao has been engaged in scallop genetics and breeding research for a long time, and has made important contributions to the development of mariculture seed project and related industries in China. He systematically studied and analyzed the genetic basis of scallop germplasm resources, enriched the theory of shellfish genetics; he invented a new genome-wide marker typing technology so as to promote the development of aquatic molecular breeding technology. In addition, he developed the BLUP multi-trait genetic evaluation and genome-wide selection breeding technology for shellfish, which promoted the construction of modern aquaculture breeding technology system. Moreover, he created a scallop breeding network platform and bred many excellent varieties in order to promoted the marine aquaculture industry.

He has published 117 papers in SCI, 109 papers in CSCD and obtained 21 national invention patents, 2 international patents and 7 software copyrights. He has bred 4 new scallop varieties, won 3 second prizes for national scientific and technological progress and 4 first prizes for provincial and ministerial science and technology. Professor Bao has been awarded as the national outstanding scientific and technological worker, advanced worker in Shandong and model worker in Qingdao. He has presided over many major national scientific research projects as the leader of the major projects of the “863” project—marine aquaculture seed project of the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” and “Twelfth Five-Year Plan”, and the director of laboratory in the “National Modern Shellfish Industry Technology System”.
